Timing changes what you actually get, separately from condition.

Two identical items, same condition, same platform, can sell for noticeably different amounts a few months apart. That's not noise - it's demand moving, and it's predictable enough to plan around.

Seasonal demand is the obvious one

Winter coats sell better going into autumn than in spring. Garden furniture sells better in April than November. Fancy dress and costumes spike around Halloween. If your item has an obvious season, listing a couple of months before peak demand - not during a lull - is usually worth more than listing the moment you decide to declutter.

Trend-driven items move faster and less predictably

Limited editions, hyped sneakers, and anything tied to a moment in culture can spike hard and then drop just as fast once attention moves on. For these, "wait for a better time" is riskier advice than it sounds - if demand is already peaking, selling now can beat holding out for more.

How to actually decide

• Rising demand, not yet at its peak: holding a few weeks is usually worth it.
• Demand already at its peak or starting to fall: sell now rather than hoping it climbs further.
• Flat, steady demand year-round: timing barely matters - list whenever suits you.
• You need the cash now: a good price today usually beats a maybe-better price later.

The hard part is knowing which of these situations you're actually in for a specific item - that's exactly what a demand read against real, current listings tells you, rather than guessing from memory of how things "usually" sell.
